Remembering courage

International writers and journalists mourn an outstanding colleague: Anna Politkovskaya

One year has passed since Anna Politkovskaya's murder. We remember her courage and honour her memory. Those like her who use words to tell unpleasant truths about The world are never short of enemies who are less discriminating in the choice of their armoury.

We speak on behalf of writers and journalists, including writers who have been imprisoned for shedding light on things which those in power wished to keep hidden.

On this anniversary we join with all who remember the murder of an outstandingly courageous and indefatigable journalist. We expect that her murderers and those who may have ordered her death will be identified and brought to justice, without fear or favour.

We wish that in every country every crime of violence or intimidation committed against journalists and writers will be properly investigated and those responsible brought to justice; because without freedom of expression, without the possibility to speak one’s mind, humanity is diminished and other human and civil rights cannot be maintained.

We express our deep sympathy to Anna's family and colleagues, and salute all Russian journalists who, like ourselves, believe that in her work she lived up to the highest professional and ethical standards.

We will keep following the investigation into Anna Politkovskaya’s death closely. Her murder was a grave blow to the principle of freedom of the media everywhere. A cowardly and terrible murder must, in the name of our common humanity, be answered by impartial justice.
