The UK section enjoyed another busy and successful year. Our membership rose to 44. The members of the Committee were: Chairman : William Horsley Secretary : Celia Hampton Treasurer : Mike Springate Events Director : David Lennon On 30 April 2009, we co-hosted a seminar on the European Parliament elections – as is our custom every four years – with the EP's London office. We are grateful to the Parliament for their generosity, not only on this occasion but also for making their elegant rooms in Westminster available for our regular lunchtime meetings. We bade farewell to Dermot Scott, Director of the London office, in September. We wish him a long and happy retirement in Dublin. "Governments at war are winning the battle to control the international media" was the topic of this year's World Press Freedom Day Debate on 1 May 2009. Hosted by the Frontline Club and chaired by William Horsley, the motion was adopted by 38:15 votes with 15 abstentions. The reports and papers on media freedom presented to the AEJ's 2008 Congress at Linz are accessible on the Media Freedom page of this website. The year's activities are chronicled in Past Events. |
