Other events

Arab Spring 2011: The freedom to report was the topic of this year’s UK public debate to mark World Press Freedom Day on 3 May 2011, chaired by William Horsley and hosted by the UK National Commission for UNESCO and the UK Press Freedom Network London, where reporters and media workers from the frontline told their stories. Prominent figures from the region, as well as the UK,considered the global implications of these dramatic struggles for free reporting and free expression, and what lessons the West should take from the tide of recent events.

As the AEJ Media Freedom Representative, William Horsley represents the AEJ at the Council of Europe, and is also active on its working group that aims to ensure that anti-terrorism laws are not misused to block legitimate freedom of expression. He also attended the United Nations special inter-agency meeting in mid-September to prepare an Action Plan on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
